What’s the Carnivore Diet?

Some common questions I hear when I mention I’m eating a carnivore diet are “what’s the carnivore diet” and “when and why the heck would you want to eat like that?” The second question is usually one of concern by the inquisitor when they find out that I am eating only meat. Strict carnivores eat only meat and drink water. Some carnivore peeps add in cheese, coffee and some heavy whipping cream. Typically, someone following a carnivore diet will consume less that 5 grams of carbs per day with some dairy added in and zero carbs if they are eating only meat and hydrating with water.

History of the Diet

The archaeological record shows that early humans were meat eaters. Some cultures to this day, still follow a meat based diet. Some of them are:

A great book on the subject is The Fat of the Land by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Stefannson was a Canadian polar explorer. He spent five years living in the Canadian Arctic with the Inuit, adapting to their way of life. Stefannson pushed an all meat diet in the early 1900’s. It never caught on then, but maybe times are changing?

Is a Carnivore Diet Healthy?

A carnivore diet is quite balanced. There are no essential foods, only essential nutrients. According to biochemist and Arctic nutrition expert Harold Draper, all the essential nutrients needed can be found in meat and sunlight. Even trace amounts of vitamin C can be found in animal products. That is all the body needs to prevent scurvy.
